Escambia District returns to B status

The Florida Department of Education has issued its school grades and the Escambia District has returned B status. Last year the district had fallen to a C, after two consecutive B years.

The district had 25 elementary and middle schools that earned A’s. The biggest turnarounds are Weis which went from a D to A, Montclair from F to A.

My memory of the school grading issue is that you have to show improvement each year unless you are already an A school to move up in grade. So Montclair is probably moved up to A from F by virtue of excellent performance on their testing this year as opposed to horrible test results last year.

School grades – in this particular case – are a measure without context.

A school can move upward or downward just by a change in population over a year or two, or by a change in sample population (include/exclude FCAT scores of students who come from households where English is not the primary language, or students who are under an Individual Development Plan because of a disability included under the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act of 2004) over the same time.

I’d be curious to know how Montclair Elementary went from

    2009 – D
    2010 – F
    2011 – A

That’s a big jump in one year.
