Kim Carmichael sent us these photos with a note: “I took these pics from the boat late today. These guys were laying this along the beach on the Gulf side near the Pass. Do you know what type of boom it is?”

    These look like oil snares or pom pom booms — ropes with mop-like bundles of coarse synthetic fiber attached. They are pick up heavy and weathered crude oils, especially small blobs. Similar to using hay but more controlled. See http://www.guardianenvironmental.com/pom-poms-snares/
