Max Brantley, the great editor of the Arkansas Times, taught me that the key to a successful, influential blog is consistency—post three times a day.
Since June 2006, I have tried to follow his rule, posting in the morning, at noon, and in the late afternoon every weekday. And even as other journalists have given up blogging for Twitter/X, Facebook, TikTok and other platforms, the blog has continued to grow.
Today, I’m suspending Brantley’s rule to enjoy the NCAA Basketball Championship Tournament. Today through Sunday, I will sit before a dozen televisions, watching the first- and second-round games, drinking cold beers and eating spicy wings.
This is when I miss New York Nicks the most. I loved commandeering a table at 10:30 a.m. and having friends stop by and join me throughout the day. I miss drinking Skittle Shots with Nick when Syracuse won a game.
Take a break today, tell you boss that you’re going to Office Depot and find somewhere to watch at least one half of basketball.
It will be good for your soul.
BTW: VCU already busted my bracket.
