Report from Ft. Pickens

Bad news folks.

This morning the first “tar balls” started landing on Pensacola Beach. This stuff is really more like blobs of chocolate mousse than tar. From what I saw on the beach in front of White Sands, the blobs ranged in size from smaller than a dime to four or five inches in diameter. The blobs are found mostly at or near the high tide mark and are scattered, but you will see one or more of them every three or four feet. Unfortunately in places the tar balls were also accompanied on shore by a heavy brown foam that is staining the sand.

I was told by a Sheriff’s deputy that the Coast Guard has started clean up crews working down at Ft. Pickens and they will be coming our way. No sign of any BP personnel as yet. Surprise, surprise.
