This sounds like it’s part of a gang initiation.
ECSO Press Release: Escambia County deputies are investigating a shooting that left an Escambia County emergency medic wounded.
At around 9:03 p.m. Friday night, deputies responded to the 1100 block of W. Hayes Street for an emergency assistance call from an EMS unit.
When deputies arrived they discovered a medic had been shot in the shoulder.
The medic told deputies that he was retrieving an item from a bag located inside his ambulance when someone tapped him on the back. As he turned around he was shot.
According to the medic, the suspect was a either a light skinned black male or a white male wearing a lime green jacket. The jacket may have NASCAR type patches sewn onto it.
The incident occurred at an EMS staging post, just blocks from Baptist Hospital. One of the responding deputies rushed the injured medic to the emergency room at Baptist in a cruiser. The medic’s identity was not released.
Other deputies from the patrol division, tactical anti-crime unit, narcotics unit and the “Desk to Road†program, along with officers from the Pensacola Police Department, converged on the area. The surrounding streets near the shooting scene were cordoned off and K9 units were utilized in the search for the suspect.
“We wish the very best for the injured medic and our thoughts are with his family, friends and co-workers,†said Sheriff’s spokesperson Deputy Chris Welborn.
As of this press release, investigators were in the preliminary stages of the investigation could not release any more information.
