The Escambia County Public School District has 11 middle and elementary schools that have greater than 70 percent minority student populations. All have over 90 percent of their students are on free or reduced lunch programs. Only three of these school have gotten an A once over the past four years. One of those, Montclair, appears to be a fluke.

Escambia County had nine non-charter elementary and middle schools get A grades last year. None of them had greater than 50 percent minority students. Only two had greater than 40 percent minority. None had more than 65 percent on the free or reduced lunch programs.
While other school districts have figured how to educate their most economically disadvantaged students and their minorities, Escambia County is still struggling. None of these numbers are no surprise for Superintendent Malcolm Thomas, who tracked these stats for his predecessor, Jim Paul.
These numbers show why the district has done so poorly under the No Child Left Behind program.
