County Consultant recommends not to keep hockey lease

The consultant that the Escambia County Commissioners hired to study the Pensacola Civic Center has concluded the county can’t afford to lease the the facility to the Pensacola Ice Flyers.

C. H. Johnson Consulting’s Executive Summary states:

Although the average attendance levels at the Ice Flyers games remain somewhat above average for the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) as a whole, the lease agreement with the team has put both the facility and the County in a financial bind. With the hockey team costing the center approximately $200,000 per year, Johnson Consulting has concluded, and described in more detail throughout the report, that to keep the hockey tenant would not prove economically advantageous to the facility or the County.

The final meeting of the Civic Center Advisory Committee is Friday, July 8 at 8 a.m. at the Escambia County Government Complex, 221 Palafox Place in the fourth floor training/conference room.

The committee’s recommendations will be presented to the Board of County Commissioners at their Committee of the Whole Workshop on Thursday, July 14.
