Landfill finally fined

scream

Escambia County Circuit Judge Terry D. Terrell declared Louisiana Investment Group LLC,the owner of the Saufley Landfill, in contempt of court and issued daily fines retroactive to May 7, the day after the deadline for the landfill to comply with an existing court order (May 16).

Terrell ordered that the initial $100 fine increase to $100 every day until it reaches $10,000.

For over a year the neighbors around the landfill have sought relief from the county, DEP and the courts to make the owners comply will the law. Terrell had given them several extensions…still the owners have drug their feet.

It’s good to see them fined, but $100 a day isn’t really that big a deal. DEP needs to slap much larger penalties on the owners.
