Greyhounds to Reach Finish Line?

Greyhounds may soon be finishing up their run in Florida.

State Democratic Sen. Maria Sachs has introduced a bill that would allow facilities currently featuring greyhound races to close down the tracks while continuing to run  card rooms. While other bills have aimed at shutting down the races, this is the first that allows for other gambling to continue.

Animal rights groups, including GREY2K USA and the American Society for the Prevention of the Cruelty to Animals, are behind the bill. Supporters cite animal cruelty, as well as the tracks’ falling attendance and revenues. Critics argue the measure would squash an industry.
