Court will rehear TIF arguments

Don’t get out the Vote “Yes” for the Community Maritime Park signs yet. We may not have to hold another referendum on the waterfront park.

In an unusual move, the Florida State Supreme Court agreed Thursday to reconsider a Sept. 6 landmark decision that said local governments need to get voter approval before pledging property taxes to pay for various construction projects. The unanimous ruling upended more than two decades’ worth of previous court decisions.

The main focus of the ruling was whether community redevelopment agencies need voter approval for bond issues. It was spurred by a dispute over a plan to use property taxes to build a road in the Perdido Key.
