Walton County Finance Director Bill Imfeld dropped out of the sheriff’s race this month after James Murray, an attorney representing the Sheriff’s Office, sent a letter to the county in July stating that Imfeld was in violation of the federal Hatch Act.
The Hatch Act prohibits county and state employees who handle federal money from running for elected office.
Imfeld said he oversees federal grant paperwork for the county but has no authority over the funds.
The complaint filed by Santa Rosa Beach resident Carol Purdy alleges that the Sheriff’s Office used public funds to pay for Murray’s legal expenses to send the letter.
