The Escambia County School District recently got its first gay-straight alliance club. The organization—with a stated mission to “make schools safer for all studentsâ€â€”is at Booker T. Washington High School.
“We are very happy about this victory,†student Bradley Thompson, a club founder, said via a press release issued by the American Civil Liberties Union.
The ACLU became involved after the GSA students initially had their club registration application denied.
“Within days, Superintendent Malcolm Thomas coordinated a meeting with officials at Booker T. Washington High School,†the ACLU statement noted, “and the school has finally agreed to uphold federal law by permitting the GSA to become an official school club.â€
A gay-straight alliance club consists of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students, as well as straight students.
