Sea Shepherd crew

This Sunday, August 4, Open Books will host the final presentation of the summer from the Operation Toxic Gulf crew, who are currently wrapping up the last leg of their 2013 study. On Monday, August 5, the Ocean Alliance-Sea Shepherd team will open their boat, the Research Vessel Odyssey, for tours from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Palafox Marina. This will be the third and final time the public will be able to check out the ship. Like Sunday’s presentation, the ship tours are free, but donations are accepted. Click here for more details.

Press Release:

PENSACOLA, July 31, 2013 – Operation Toxic Gulf—a collaborative expedition between Ocean Alliance and Sea Shepherd Conservation Society studying the health of the Gulf of Mexico after the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster—returns to Pensacola on Sunday, August 4. At 7 pm Sunday the crew will be at Open Books, 1040 N. Guillemard St. in Pensacola, to share the latest photos and test results from the Gulf.

Iain Kerr, vice president of Ocean Alliance, will discuss the scientific methods used by the expedition, and will release some preliminary findings about the toxic contaminants found in whales in the Gulf and around the world. Eliza Muirhead, a native of Australia and member of the Sea Shepherd crew, will join him to share amazing photos and video documenting the ship’s journey and life at sea. She will also show photos she recently took as part of Sea Shepherd’s Antarctic campaign to stop Japanese whaling in the Southern Ocean.

Operation Toxic Gulf is a joint expedition of Ocean Alliance and Sea Shepherd Netherlands. Ocean Alliance specializes in scientific research and advocacy for ocean life—particularly whales–and is based in Gloucester, MA. The Sea Shepherds are an environmental group that works to protect the world’s oceans using direct action, and is familiar to many through the Animal Planet series, Whale Wars.
