The Independent News wanted to show the human toll of the increasing numbers of homicides in our community, many of which were going unsolved because witnesses were reluctant to come forward.
A group of mothers who had lost children to street and domestic violence had formed a support group, PAIN–Parents Against Injustice & Negligence. The mother of the cover, Lavon Brown, did have some resolution to her son’s death. In November, Robert Parker Jr. was found guilty of second degree murder in the slaying of her son, Labar.
