See Perdido Key Chamber on ‘Tanked’

Friday, 9 p.m., Animal Planet airs ‘Tanked’ episode about the giant aquarium designed and built for the Perdido Key Visitor Information Center

Here’s a chance to see how that 403-gallon pirate ship aquarium got inside the Perdido Key Chamber of Commerce & Visitor Information Center.

“Tanked” will air at 9 p.m. Friday on the Animal Planet Channel with the story of the aquarium.

The aquarium features a pirate’s ship, treasure chest and gold coins, part of Perdido Key’s legend for buccaneering. It is home to fish and an ecosystem native to the Gulf of Mexico.

The project was led by Wayde King and Brett Raymer, the hosts of “Tanked,” a reality TV show. The two hosts, who are brothers-in-law, installed the aquarium in mid-June with participation from several dozen Pensacolians dressed as pirates.

The aquarium is a popular display at the Perdido Key Area Chamber of Commerce & Visitor Center, 15500 Perdido Key Drive.

To fund the project, the chamber used a BP grant received after the 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
