Inaugural Pensacola a la Habana Regatta this weekend

The first major, fully-permitted sailboat race to Cuba – since diplomatic relations between the U.S. and Cuba ceased Jan. 3, 1961 – starts this weekend near the mouth of Bayou Chico at 8 a.m.

Hosted by Pensacola Yacht Club, 23 vessels ranging from high tech performance multi-hulls to classic cruisers will compete.

In its press release, PYC gave its reason for the regatta: “This locally coordinated effort opens the door to place Pensacola in the international spotlight now and in the future. The event crosses sporting, economic and cultural lines.”
