Third grade reading scores predicted graduation rate

On Monday, the Florida Department of Education reported that the high school graduation rates for the Escambia County School District are up -moving from 72.7% in 2014-15 to 76.1% in 2015-16.

When the Class of 2016 was third graders, 72% of that class scored a three or higher on the FCAT reading test.

Randy Hammer of the Studer Community Institute has written several times about how a third of our children are being left behind. The facts continue to support him, particularly with our economically disadvantaged children.

Another interesting fact: In 2006, the ECSD had 3,202 third graders. Nine years later, the senior class had only 2,609 students. We lost 593 students.
