Blount Redevelopment Selection Committee gets instructions

By Duwayne Escobedo

Pensacola staff instructed the three-member selection committee Tuesday on the process for choosing either the ParsCo development team’s or Gunther Properties’ proposal for the old W.A. Blount Junior High School site.

The selection committee for the redevelopment project include Nannette Chandler, Chandler and Company Construction owner, Bonita Player, Engineering & Planning Resources principal, and Parry Malone, Southern Artisan Builders owner.

The Blount school, which is one of the first major workforce redevelopment projects by Mayor Ashton Hayward, has been followed closely since he announced plans to do it in 2011.

The selection committee will turn in its score sheet and any comments they have in to the city on Tuesday, May 23 and meet for a second time at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 25 to review the two workforce housing plans.

The school site was cleared in late 2012. After spending $225,000 to buy the 2.65-acre site, the city paid about $466,700 to demolish the eyesore, which was built in 1930 and then abandoned for nearly three decades.
