Hate crimes: Homophobic flyers appear on UWF campus

Someone has distributed flyers containing homophobic slurs around the University of West Florida main campus.

UWF President Martha Saunders sent this email to students, faculty and staff:

Dear faculty, staff and students:

University officials are actively investigating an incident of vandalism that was found on the Pensacola campus yesterday evening. We understand that the messages displayed may have generated concern and fear for some in our community.

At the University of West Florida, we are committed to ensuring our institution is a safe and respectful environment for all. We do not tolerate acts of hate or prejudice targeting members of our community.

The University provides resources on campus to support you, such as the Office of Equity and Diversity at www.uwf.edu/respect or 850.474.2059 and Counseling and Psychological Services at www.uwf.edu/counseling and 850.474.2420.

I encourage our entire community to continue ensuring UWF is a place where everyone knows they belong.

Please report suspicious or concerning activity you may observe on campus to UWF Police at 850.474.2415.

Sincerely yours,
Dr. Martha D. Saunders
