I second Joan’s comment. This is the strangest campaign race. Chance Walsh has spent a ton of money but admittedly hasn’t had time to be on the campaign trail or walk doors. Kevin Brown has been out talking with constituents and walking daily, but hasn’t spend scads of money that could have been used before early voting.
In a weird way, I find it oddly comforting that Brown did *not* have a well-oiled machine at his back, but ran things way more grass roots. I expected a juggernaut of PR and was surprised when it didn’t materialize. Instead, it was Kohler who ran the well-oiled campaign, and of course as Gene Valentino was one of his backers, Kohler would have been handed the map for how to check boxes on the West Side.
Here’s what Gene wouldn’t have done–racked up every type of violation under the sun, with some of them the most blatant and flagrant I’ve seen. Really offensive stuff, with his disgusting trafficking of his uniform, accompanied by DoD violations, being the worst–including pulling rank on fellow vets who protest at the abuse of the seal.
There is bending stuff in grey areas during campaigns, and then there is blatant disregard and total disrespect. The list of violations I am aware of beyond his continued use of what should be sacred military symbols:
–Big campaign violation on not adequately claiming enough in kind of that ridiculous jumbotron to get himself mega size in a Star Lake backyard and at a brewery.
–Nailing campaign signs into a utility pole outside SW library, captured on video in broad daylight, as his supporters were waving.
–Nailing them into multiple trees outside SW library, and leaving them there behind.
–Spreading signs all over town illegally in ROW, particularly on busy corners, and across the street from the exits of busy restaurants.
–Potential failure to disclose his party in a radio ad, in order to try to nab up dem and NPA votes.
It’s *clear* Kohler has a fundamental problem with adhering to any norm of behavior in his hunger to win this seat. It’s particularly disturbing that you disrespect your fellow vets–who have a *duty* to call you out on it. With his wife throwing up emoticons on anybody who dares to complain.
If he gets elected, he’ll be treating his constituents as scullery rats soon enough. Just like his predecessor. 8 years of a military officer who clearly considers himself above the common folks on little things like rules and law, and a smashmouth wife in front of him has been quite enough, thank you. District 2 does not need 4 more. It was Kohler’s behavior on the campaign trail that snapped me out of my neutrality, and at that time I gave both of the others serious consideration, and talked with both of them. I chose to endorse Kevin Brown because of his existing relationships with FPL, DOT, ECUA, West Regional Planning Committee, and Tallahassee, because we are desperate for improved infrastructure on the west side, and his relationships and willingness to help on a current issue in Navy Point has already resulted in material results for our neighborhood on the lights issue. Here’s to more of it.
From where I sit. Kevin has run the worst campaign, which is unfortunate because his experience of getting funding for projects will serve the citizens well. He will be the better candidate for the board, D2 and the entire county. The average voter may not have kept up with the issues like how much Innerararity point has had to pay for MSBU for septic to sewer conversions on their property tax. When he unlocks the Triumph funds and works with Tallahassee and the appropriations committee connections that will be a win. In an open primary everyone in the district can vote and none seems to have reached out to all. Kevin’s campaign picture really is not good. For as much as he raised, he didn’t seem to have a basic understanding of how to manipulate the low info voters. You have Kohler nailing signs higher to poles and blasting his message on loudspeakers in neighborhoods on a Saturday morning. And Chance, Chance seems clueless but locals know him. Hopefully Brown will succeed but many votes have been cast, mailed in and people make up their mind for various reasons. Even not spending the funds is not a good look. Does he really want it or is he setting up for a house run in a few years? Getting the s3ptic to sewer helps everyone. Think of bacteria in our waterways. Infrastructure may sound boring but at the end of the day, the past accomplishments really don’t matter, getting improvement at the county level is what is I portant.
