Daily Outtakes: FPL rates dropping

In a bench decision today, the Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) approved a $5 million credit to be applied to fuel costs for Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) customers.

WHY: The credit stems from replacement power costs for nuclear power plant outages at FPL’s St. Lucie Units 1 & 2 and Turkey Point Units 3 & 4 between 2020-2022.

DIG DEEPER: Originally part of previous Fuel Cost Recovery Clause hearings, the issues decided today were deferred for future consideration. FPL and the Office of Public Counsel, representing customers, agreed to resolve the issues by applying a $5 million credit to fuel costs when they are next calculated. The approved agreement also stipulates that FPL will be subject to a follow-up nuclear operations and management audit covering 2024-2029.

Other parties to the case—the Florida Retail Federation and the Florida Industrial Power Users Group—took no position on the agreement and were excused from today’s hearing.
