Yesterday, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced the renaming of its Gulf of Mexico Division to the Gulf of America Division (GAD).
“The Gulf region represents a vital economic and ecological resource for our nation,” said Administrator Lee Zeldin. “This watershed supports crucial energy production, providing approximately 14% of America’s crude oil output while also sustaining one of the world’s most diverse marine ecosystems. EPA remains committed to protecting the 1,630 miles of coastline and the complex network of 33 rivers that flow from 31 states into these waters.”
WHY: To be in accordance with President Trump’s Executive Order, “Restoring Names That Honor American Greatness.”
BACKGROUND: The Gulf region’s fisheries are among the most productive in the nation, ranking second in commercial fishing volume nationally. The waters support valuable populations of snapper, shrimp, oysters, grouper, and stone crab, contributing significantly to coastal economies. Through the newly renamed Gulf of America Division, EPA will continue facilitating voluntary, nonregulatory approaches and public-private partnerships to enhance water quality and habitat protection.
Established in 1988, the Gulf program is part of EPA’s Great Water Body programs. The watershed encompasses drainage from 31 U.S. states and Mexico, spanning 1,630 miles of U.S. coastline. The region is globally recognized for its exceptional ecological, economic, and social importance.
