Former Florida House Speaker Paul Renner officially launched his campaign for Governor of Florida, filing paperwork to seek the state’s top executive office as the Ron DeSantis era comes to a close.
Renner, who served as Speaker during the final two years of his legislative tenure from 2015 to 2024, positioned himself as the candidate who would follow Gov. DeSantis’s lead and continue Florida’s conservative policy trajectory.
- “I stood with Ron DeSantis to brand our state the Free State of Florida,” Renner said in his announcement. “I’m running for Governor so that when the DeSantis era comes to an end, we can defend our victories and solve the challenges that remain.”
Military and Legal Background
The Palm Coast resident served 20 years as a Naval officer with combat deployments during Operation Desert Storm and in Afghanistan. His military service included navigating warships through mine-infested waters and commanding units focused on stopping foreign fighters.
Before entering politics, Renner worked as a state prosecutor and later established a private legal practice. He currently serves on the Board of Governors of the State University System.
Legislative Record
During his speakership, Renner presided over what he characterized as Florida’s “most consequential and conservative session.” His legislative priorities included a significant expansion of school choice programs, which he describes as the largest in the nation.
- Renner also championed legislation targeting Big Tech companies, implementing measures designed to protect children from online predators and addictive social media platforms. His tenure was marked by significant litigation reform efforts aimed at reducing ‘frivolous’ lawsuits and stabilizing Florida’s insurance market.
Environmental conservation featured prominently in his agenda, with support for record Everglades investments and expansion of the Florida Wildlife Corridor to protect natural habitats.
Policy Platform
Looking ahead to his gubernatorial campaign, Renner identified several key challenges he aims to address, including the high cost of living, education policy, the impact of border security, the effect of technology on children, and the strain on infrastructure from population growth.
His announcement emphasized his role in recent ballot measure defeats, including constitutional amendments related to marijuana and abortion access. Renner also highlighted his work on election integrity measures and support for law enforcement.
- The announcement marks the beginning of what may become a competitive Republican primary as Congressman Byron Donalds and other potential candidates seek to succeed Gov. DeSantis.
