A Saint’s Story Takes the Stage: “Francis: The Man from Assisi” Premieres in Pensacola

FRANCIS: THE MAN FROM ASSISI, an original musical by Allen Pote and Tom Long, will have its staged reading premiere on August 8 and 9 at Pensacola State College’s Ashmore Theater.

This production represents the latest collaboration between Pote and Tom Long, a celebrated storyteller in Christian theater. Their 30-year partnership has produced acclaimed musicals including “In the Company of Women” and “Mary and Martha: Heart and Hand.” Pote’s previous musical “Seaplane” was performed at both Pensacola venues and the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC.

The Man Who Changed the World

Francis of Assisi remains one of history’s most compelling spiritual figures. The poet and Catholic friar founded the Franciscans and chose a revolutionary path of Christian poverty. His influence extends beyond Catholicism, earning reverence from people of many faiths and secular audiences. As namesake of the previous Pope and patron saint of animals and the environment, Francis continues to inspire. Martin Scorsese recently featured him in a documentary.

What to Expect

The performances will showcase Pensacola’s talented singers and actors, including former Pensacola Children’s Chorus members. As Pote explains, “Francis struggled to find his way to live a life that had purpose. He was revered not only by Catholics but by people of many faiths and even the secular public.”

The staged reading format allows Pote and Long to gather audience feedback before presenting a fully staged production in Pensacola next year.
