Another school that gets it right

At Mater Academy Charter High School in Hialeah Gardens, students are never asked “if’’ they’re going to college. They’re asked “where.’’ Nearly 80 percent of the nearly 3,000 students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, typically an economic indicator of low income.

Mater Academy High School was one of three schools in the nation honored by the College Board for their high number of students taking Advanced Placement courses and going on to college.
