BP’s Pleasure Fleet


For the past two days, I’ve been investigating BP’s much-touted Vessels of Opportunity program. One thing is certain about BP now that we’re in our sixth week of the largest environmental disaster in U.S. history—if BP is bragging about something then we know the facts will belie the hype. The latest report from the Deepwater Horizon Command in Roberts, La. states “more than 1,900 vessels (the VOO program) are responding on site, including skimmers, tugs, barges, and recovery vessels to assist in containment and cleanup efforts.”

It appears that few of those 1,900 vessels are commercial fishing or charter boats.
