Buzz: Mike Hill jumps into D1 race

The buzz from the weekend centered around former State Rep. Mike Hill. He has notified Florida House leadership that he intends to get into the District 1 race and challenge Michelle Salzman.

The State Farm agent represented District 2 from 2013-2016, winning a special election after the death of Rep. Clay Ford.

In 2016, Hill faced State Rep. Doug Broxson in the Republican primary for the District 1 seat in the Florida Senate. Hill was defeated, winning 43.5% of the vote to Broxson’s 56.5%.

Hill got in trouble when it was revealed that he didn’t live in District 2 at a unit at Portofino as he claimed. Hill had kept his residence in the Marcus Point subdivision, where his family lived.

In 2018, Hill returned and ran against Rebekah Bydlak in the GOP primary for District 1 state rep – which includes Marcus Point. He served one term before being upset by Michelle Salzman in 2020. – 11,081-10,032.

Hill was considered the least effective lawmaker in Tallahassee when he served in the House.
