Escambia County | Tourism:
Gov. Ron DeSantis announced today that VISIT Florida will award $1 million to the Northwest Florida Tourism Council to resume its Northwest Florida Beaches marketing campaign after Hurricane Isaias.
- For the past two years, Escambia County Clerk Pam Childers has dragged out paying the county’s dues to the council. She repeatedly demanded more information from Visit Pensacola and questioned the value of the membership.
- Today the governor answered that question with a check.
What the Governor Announced
- The money: $1 million from VISIT FLORIDA’s dedicated crisis recovery budget, which is reserved for hurricanes and other disasters.
- The recipient: The Northwest Florida Tourism Council, which represents eight Gulf Coast counties.
- The purpose: Resuming the Northwest Florida Beaches brand campaign, with an emphasis on fall and winter drive-market travel and added support for the most affected counties.
- The partner: VISIT FLORIDA will coordinate with local tourism leaders to launch the campaign.
“For every dollar invested in this strategic tourism marketing effort in 2024-2025, Northwest Florida generated $58.95 in total economic impact.” Gov. Ron DeSantis
The Numbers Childers Wanted
The return on investment is the heart of the dispute. The governor’s office says a previous campaign, funded in part by Triumph Gulf Coast, Inc., produced results for the region from 2024 to 2025:
- More than 2 million additional visitors
- $327 million in additional visitor spending
- Nearly 3,000 jobs supported
- $35.74 in direct visitor spending for every $1 invested
- $58.95 in total economic impact for every $1 invested
Those figures come from the governor’s office and VISIT FLORIDA, not an independent audit. But they are exactly the kind of value-for-money evidence the clerk has been asking Visit Pensacola to produce.
Will Childers remove the unnecessary shackles she has placed on Escambia County’s tourism marketing?
Will Childers pay this year’s dues promptly?
Will Childers cut checks that will let Visit Pensacola participate in the campaigns developed by Visit Florida and Northwest Florida Tourism Council?
