Construction barge strikes Pensacola Bay Bridge

At the county’s Tuesday morning press conference, Escambia County Sheriff David Morgan confirmed rumors that a construction barge has struck the Pensacola Bay Bridge. However, he deferred reporters to the Florida Department of Transportation for more details.

County Administrator Janice Gilley said that her staff has been contact with State Sen. Doug Broxson and has asked FDOT embed someone at the EOC. She hoped to have more information at the 3 p.m. presser.

As of 10 a.m., Pensacola Bay Bridge is the only bridge closed to traffic, according to Chief Deputy Chip Simmons. However, deputies are monitoring other spans.

Emergency Manager Eric Gilmore reported Hurricane Sally is expected to make landfill in the Mobile area early Wednesday morning. We should expect up to 30 inches of rainfall in the next 24-36 hours.
