Elementary schools – third, fourth and fifth- had the same percentage of students score a 3 or higher, which is considered passing and proficient for their grade levels. Forty-five percent all third and fifth graders were not reading on their grade levels; 44 percent of fourth graders were below a passing score.
Middle school students – sixth, seventh and eighth – showed improvements ranging from 1-2 percentage points. All were below state averages, but the sixth and seventh grades closed the gap by 2-3 points. Forty-seven percent of sixth graders, 48 percent of seventh graders and 49 percent of eighth graders failed to pass the reading test.
In high school, the ninth graders scored two points less than 2013 and tenth graders scored three points better. Both grades were below state averages. Fifty-five percent of the ninth graders and 48 percent of the tenth graders failed to pass the test. Juniors and Seniors don’t take the reading test.
