Students in grades 3 to 11 will take from Monday April 11 through April 21 the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test, which includes exams in math, reading, science and writing. Students in grades 5, 8, and 11 take science. Writing was given earlier this year, and only to students in grades 4, 8 and 10.
The FCAT test scores are used to determine whether students are promoted or given diplomas, to measure a school’s success and, thanks to Florida Legislature, to gauge teacher merit.
This year’s tests are labeled FCAT 2.0 —reading and most math exams have been redone to meet new, more challenging academic standards. We don’t know how that will impact test results.
⢠All FCAT 2.0 Reading and Mathematics assessments will be administered in two 70-minute sessions, with a break in the middle of each session.
⢠FCAT 2.0 Reading assessments consist of multiple-choice items only.
⢠FCAT 2.0 Mathematics assessments consist of multiple-choice items and gridded-response items in grades 4-8, and multiple-choice items only in grade 3.
⢠Students in grades 3 and 4 will receive a ruler to use during Session 2 of FCAT 2.0 Mathematics, students in grades 7 and 8 will receive a hand-held FCAT four-function calculator to use during the Mathematics sessions.
⢠Students in grade 3 must achieve an FCAT Equivalent Score at Level 2 or higher in Reading, or show good cause, to be eligible for promotion.
⢠Students in grade 10 who entered grade 9 in the 2009-10 school year must score 1926 (FCAT Equivalent Score) or above in Reading for graduation purposes.
Here is a link to frequently asked questions about FCAT 2.0.
This year the FCAT will include computer-based testing. The 10th grade FCAT math exam will be taken online, as will many “retake” exams for older students who have yet to pass the 10th-grade tests needed to earn a diploma.
On the day of testing, a student will log in to the test by clicking the icon described in the script and using the unique username and password information on the student authorization ticket. Once the student is logged in to the test, he or she will not be able to access any other applications on the computer. A student will be able to change his or her answers at any time until the test is submitted by the student. Student scores will be provided as determined by the Department for the assessment and will not be available immediately upon completion of the assessment. For timed assessments, the test administrator will be responsible for ensuring that the student is provided the appropriate amount of time.
Writing scores will be sent to FDOEÂ early next month, the balance in June. Last year wasn’t a good year for the Escambia County district
Escambia County last year had one of its worse FCAT years in 2010. The District had the fewest number of elementary and middle schools receive A status since 2001 – only 12 (26%). In 2009, the district had 26; 2008 23; 2007 20; 2006 26
The District did have one A high school (West Florida) and four B high schools. Two slipped to D schools – Escambia and Pine Forest.
Santa Rosa County had another strong year. Four of its six high schools were A schools, two B schools. Fifteen out its 20 middle and elementary schools were A schools–75 percent.
