New Palafox Project Update: Soft Opening Eyed for May 24
City targets a pedestrian day on South Palafox, with construction pavers 85% complete and a packed spring event calendar taking shape.

Soft Opening: South Palafox Pedestrian Day
The City is planning a soft-opening pedestrian day for South Palafox around May 24. Walker notes that final confirmation may arrive with limited advance notice and encourages stakeholders to begin preliminary planning now.
“Additional details will be shared as they become available; however, final confirmation may come with limited advance notice. We encourage you to begin any necessary planning in anticipation of the event.”

Keyla Fest: If Pensacola’s own Keyla Richardson lands in the Top 3 on American Idol on May 4, the city is planning a Hometown Idol celebration complete with a parade and concert. Details at keylafest.com.
Gallery Night Returns to Palafox — At Last
After three months in exile on Jefferson Street, Gallery Night is coming home to Palafox. The New Palafox road construction forced the beloved monthly event off its traditional corridor for January, February, and March—a significant disruption for the galleries, restaurants and vendors who depend on the foot traffic it generates.
May’s Gallery Night marks the first time the event returns to its Palafox home since the construction detour began — a milestone that signals the corridor is coming back to life.
The May edition carries the theme “Festa Italiana”—a fitting backdrop for what feels like a genuine homecoming. For more information, visit gallerynightpensacola.org.
More Upcoming Events
Fiesta Pensacola’s Grand Fiesta Parade on May 29 will use the alternate route on Jefferson Street. See details at fiestapensacola.org.
Intersections & Traffic
Several intersections along the corridor remain under active construction. Here’s the current status:
- Romana, Intendencia, and Government Street are under construction. Mid-block crossings are open at the Romana block and near Government Street. County employees have direct access to Intermission via the “Richard Stone Cut-through.”
- Zaragossa intersection will be closed intermittently; a full closure will not occur until the Government Street intersection reopens.
- Main Street westbound traffic shifts to the center lane from Monday, April 27, through May 6. Drivers heading south of Main are encouraged to detour via Jefferson Street.
Construction Progress
Paver installation is 85% complete. Construction remains on schedule for the incentivized completion date of May 24 for the Palafox portion of the project.
