Legal maneuvers could hurt Florida

Yesterday, Transocean got U.S. District Judge Keith Ellison (Southern District of Texas) to suspend any cases against the owner of the Deepwater Horizon rig because the company filed a request to limit its liability to $26.7 million.

The Houston Chronicle reports British Petroleum, who is responsible for the oil spill, has requested their cases be heard by Houston-based U.S. District Judge Lynn Hughes.

The last I heard only five claims have been filed in Texas. It could be disastrous for Floridians to have to fight their cases hundreds of miles away from their shores.
