Martinez must return campaign funds

Florida’s Republican senator was found to have received contributions to 2004 campaign in excess of federal limits, according to an audit by the Federal Election Commission. According to the FEC report, auditors found Martinez’s campaign received donations that exceeded federal limits by $313,235.

He has been forced to return $95,000 to contributors. In 2004, Martinez spent $12.3 million in the campaign and narrowly defeated Democratic nominee Betty Castor of Tampa.

Martinez is currently using his fundraising expertise to help the Republican Party as its national chairman.
