Outlaw private landfills

We have six active construction and demolition debris landfills permitted to operate in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties. Four have experienced fires in the past year — Saufley (and it’s still smoldering) and Cove in Escambia County, and Joiner and Coyote in Santa Rosa.

It seems like every month we have new complaint about a private landfill. The owners don’t comply with the laws. The Saufley landfill owners have been in and out of court for nearly a year.
It’s time we outlaw them and force the debris to the public landfills – that do follow laws and have some concern for the community.
