The Pensacola Humane Society files its tax returns based a fiscal year that runs from Oct. 1 through Sept. 30. The most current tax return on the IRS website is for the fiscal year that ended on Sept. 30, 2021.
The return shows Gerald Adcox is the principal officer and the organization has 14 members on its governing body. However, the return only lists the board officers:
Jennifer Bitner, Executive Director *
Gerald Adcox, President
Andy Barnes, VP
Barbara Sawyer, Treasurer
Eloise Lautier de Varona, Secretary.
*Note: According to her Linkedin account, Bitner resigned as executive director in April 2021, five months before the end of the fiscal year.
At the Dec. 12 staff meeting, employees and volunteers repeatedly asked that the board members be listed. The board members at the meeting refused to give them the names of the board members.
The Form 990 shows PHS operated at loss in the previous fiscal year that ended Sept. 30, 2020 – Expenses exceeded Revenues by $199,291.
PHS did receive contributions totaling $1.66 million, according to the tax return – which must be the endowment that we were told existed.
See PHS 990.
Thank you again Rick for keeping the public informed and trying to shed light on the financial dealings of the Board of Directors for the Pensacola Humane Society. All the former staff and volunteers want is transparency from the BOD and animals to be cared for with the monies donated from the community.
