The Lincoln Project chief of staff said on WCOA this morning that she believes the MAGA (Make America Great Again) movement is done with former President Trump.
“Trump was a symptom of the political movement,” Wiggins said. “He was not the political movement. And I think in a lot of ways that political movement has outgrown Donald Trump. And so, I mean, you’re going to see this continue to play out with these far right-leaning people.”
She added, “I think the midterm said this–‘we want to move back more to the middle.’ I don’t think that this was a referendum that said America wants to move left, or America wants to move into the progressive space. I think what it said was we are more moderate than this extremism.”
Not many people yet recognize the integrity, and just as important the courage, of republicans associated with the Lincoln Project and other cross-over groups fighting the currents of Trumpism post-truth.
I don’t know Ms. Wiggins, but the dangerous backlash and bitter opprobrium many of the republicans willing to fight the recent direction of the GOP have suffered is well documented. Even at this moment, when it should be so obvious that the never-Trumpers were right from the start, the attitude of the current GOP’s path forward reminds me of what Hall of Fame Iowa football coach Hayden Frye once answered in response to a question about filling talent on his graduated O-line: “We don’t recruit. We reload.” It is astonishing that in the face of massive national backlash from the electorate against the GOP’s assault against constitutional freedoms, unity, and common sense, republican party leaders are right now scrambling together what clumps of dirt they can to fortify their assault against our democracy.
Thank goodness also for the Lincoln Project’s work on defeating every single election denier they targeted who was up to hold an Elections office. What was it, something around 20 for 20 on rejecting that lunacy nationwide?
Immensely grateful to Ryan Wiggins and every earnest republican who refused to be bought, bullied, brainwashed, or bowed by their party’s current sickness. They have stood at the vanguard of this fight for preserving the best form of government this world has ever seen, well before the country even realized that we needed them. When the history books get written on the last few years–hopes to God an account of a near miss on what the DC GOP and their rapacious operatives have been attempting–they will go down as having one of the most profound material and moral impacts ever benefitting this country.
