Sheriffs not interested in gun task force

Both Escambia County Sheriff David Morgan and Santa Rosa County Sheriff Bob Johnson have told the PNJ that they won’t participate in the joint federal-city task force to curb gun-related crimes that Mayor Grover Robinson and U.S. Attorney Lawrence Keefe have announced.

Sheriff Morgan said Mayor Robinson didn’t consult with him prior to making the announcement and cited the county’s low overall crime rate as to why his agency wouldn’t participate. ECSO has “adequate resources” to deal with the gun-related violence in its jurisdiction, according to the sheriff.

Santa Rosa County Sheriff Bob Johnson told the daily newspaper that his county doesn’t have gun violence at a scale that warrants federal help.
