Showdown on court funding

Our court system is expensive. In this area, law enforcement has an “arrest everybody” attitude. State attorney has a “try everybody” attitude. And the courts get clogged.

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports that Legislature wants to cut nearly $17 million from the state courts budget by June 30. In Broward County, courthouse administration employees would have to take 22 unpaid days off in circuit courts and 58 days in county courts. Civil matters would take a back seat to criminal cases. Parents who rely on case managers to navigate through child-support disputes or dependency cases would have to wait longer for rulings.
