SPLC Eyes Escambia Schools

The Southern Poverty Law Center will be in town tomorrow. The organization has announced that it filed a complaint with the Department of Education against several Florida school districts, including Escambia County School District.

The SPLC will hold a press conference tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. at the federal courthouse downtown. According to a press release, the complaint regards the school districts in question to “subjecting African-American students to harsh disciplinary policies at a far higher rate than white students.”

The release continues: “The complaints explain how the school districts have imposed long-term suspensions on children as young as 8 years old for minor rule infractions, such as tardies, cell phone usage, talking in class and dress code violations.
