Santa Rosa Schools:
Florida Education Commissioner Henry Mack strong-armed Santa Rosa Superintendent of Schools Karen Barber, refusing to accept any reason why she couldn’t reopen the public schools on Wednesday, Oct. 14, according to a source who sat in on the conference call with Mack and other state officials.
The school district had sent its staff home after working 15 hours on the schools. Mack wanted to send in state clean-up crews, and Barber’s staff explained they wouldn’t be available to open the schools until the next day.
“Too tired.” Mack accused Barber and her team of being “too tired” to make Santa Rosa schools available for students. He said she was denying parents the choice of sending their children to school on Wednesday.
“If I have to order FHP (Florida Highway Patrol) break down your doors, that’s what I will do.”
That is what the education commissioner said, according to my source.
No title, no respect. The bullying continued with Mack refusing to use Barber’s title and using her first name instead.
“Rick, it was the worst abuse of power I’ve ever seen,” my source said of Mack’s behavior. “Superintendent Barber was led to believe Mack would cut her funding and launch a character assassination against the district and her personally. The superintendent was backed into a corner.”
The outcome: The Santa Rosa County School Board voted unanimously Tuesday morning to keep schools closed through Friday, Oct. 16.
- Schools stay closed through Friday, Oct. 16
- Classes resume Monday, Oct. 19

It seems “Henry” gets pleasure out of talking down to the teachers and local school officials and boasting about what he will do if his demands are not met.. He is just another example of a small man trying be an authority figure. Congratulations to Santa Rosa school board for doing the right thing and keeping everyone safe until more recovery in the county can be completed.

To make that decision and threaten to use force without actually knowing and seeing the situation is just stupidity. Someone that is not hands on and boots on the ground should not be able to make the decision in the first place. Let Henry put on his hard hat with some gloves for those soft hands and get a hammer and help in the process of the clean up and repair. Until then sit back and shut up. This is not your lane and you may be in the wrong position with that thought process. Schools have a zero tolerance for bullying HENRY!!!
Henry “Mack” Maklakiewicz isn’t who he portrays himself to be.

Using state law enforcement to retaliate against a political opponent?
Welcome to the police state of Florida.
If he really wants to see the damage, come to Santa Rosa County. Visit some of the schools like Milton High School. That place looks like it took an artillery strike. The county itself is inundated with downed power lines, pine trees snapped off 15-20ft up the trunk that were huge when I was a child and I’m looking at 70 hard. Many of these schools either have no power or just got it back. I could go on but then I’ll start getting really angry. Before you make such “decree” come check it out first hand.
I’m all for getting the kids back to school. If Mack wanted it to happen so quick, he should have sent the clean up crews here on Sunday and he should have come with them to inspect the schools personally. Sounds like he is trying to make a name for himself regardless of the cost.
What do you expect from a DeSantis appointee? It takes a bully to appoint a bully. I knew kids like him in middle school. Apparently, some never quit being bullies.
