North Palafox diet begins next Monday

From Office of Mayor Grover Robinson: Construction on the North Palafox Street Road Diet Project will begin Monday, July 8, part of the City of Pensacola’s efforts to become a more bicycle and pedestrian friendly community.

The project aims to transform Palafox Street into a multi-modal and shared roadway for vehicles and bicyclists. The existing four-lane section of Palafox Street between Cervantes and Wright streets will become a two-lane, multi-modal roadway, with the current outside lanes changed into bike lanes and on-street parallel parking in both directions. The section of Palafox between Wright and Garden streets will be modified into a “share-road” to allow for both motorists and bicyclists to share the travel lane.

“The transformation of this section of Palafox Street is just the beginning of our goal to create a more bikeable, walkable city,” Mayor Grover Robinson said. “I’m excited to see this project come to fruition as we implement the Complete Streets concept and build a safer community for all of our residents and visitors â€“ regardless of how they choose to explore Pensacola.”

Construction is expected to be completed in 15 calendar days, weather permitting. The work area will include the section of North Palafox Street between Garden and Cervantes streets, requiring closures of the outside lanes in that area. At least one lane in each direction will remain open at all times during construction, and access to properties and businesses will be maintained.

The City of Pensacola recently awarded a contract to Gulf Coast Traffic Engineers Inc. of Pensacola for construction of the North Palafox Street Road Diet Project.

A city construction inspector will be monitoring the contractor and project progress daily. Every effort will be made to minimize the impact during construction, and the contractor will be required to implement all necessary safety precautions onsite.
